Ariel Women's basket ball team PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 15 February 2010

ImageThe city of Ariel has its very own women's only basket ball team, and to add to that it was started of by an ola chadasha in Ariel only a few months after she arrived in Israel.

Natalie Zacks had been thinking of aliyah for years, she had also been playing basketball with her girlfriends in Detroit for years.  Once Natalie and her family had decided to make the big move she started enquiring about basketball in Israel.  From one list serve to another she kept getting a negative answer, some communities had no idea what she was on about, some had a team, but not for women and some were just not interested. All this changed once she got on to the Ariel list serve (a very small one at the time) the first to answer was a man – Josh, and after checking with his Israeli wife gave Natalie the green light she was looking for – she had found a community who doesn’t have a team and is interested in starting on (well us here in Ariel are always looking for new adventures).

Let there be no mistake, the Zacks family decision to move half way around the world straight to Ariel was not made by the idea of having a basketball team.  But this was the icing on the topping.

Hanukkah in Ariel PDF Print E-mail

ImageThe city of Ariel was busy busy busy during the Hanukkah Holiday!

So many activities to choose from: Children's Hanukkah party with a Clown, a visit to the nearby army post for candle lighting with the soldiers, Adults Hanukah party as well as the Ulpan Hanukah party!

On Sunday morning the Ariel Aliyah children arrived at Ohel Efrym Shul (headed by Rabbi Maizles from South Africa) for the Children's Hanukkah party. The program coordinators had organized a Clown performance as well as a "Make your own Hanukiah" and doughnuts for everyone afterwards.

The Clown performance was great – she spoke both English and Hebrew to the Children.  They danced to Hanukah songs, played games and had a fun time.  After an hour of games and dancing, the children began painting and sticking the Hanukiot and Dreidels and gave the Shul a general makeover… To end the party, each child got to take home their Hanukiah and Dreidel, a Clay Oil Jug and a very large doughnut!

Ariel Bowling night out PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 09 December 2009

ImageA Bowling and Pizza Night Out took place Thursday the 12th of November,
A bus full of excited children and parents left Ariel going straight to Petach Tikva's bowling alley.
Arriving at 6 pm, the bowling alley was empty which was a great advantage as we had the place to ourselves.

The kids were having a blast! The manager raised the children's bumpers and brought out a little slide so even the smallest children could send the ball straight down the alley.

David Moshkovitz won the kid’s game and scored over 100!  He left many of the adults way behind too……
Shauli Zacks was star of the night with the highest score (after the bus driver…..) while Yuval was the fastest bowler, managing to send a few balls flying at 25 km/hr straight down the gutter. After a few strikes everyone had a break to nosh some pizza, and then continued to finish off the first match. It was almost impossible to tear the kids away and we all had to promise we would return again soon. It seems we have found a favorite activity for the Ariel Olim!!

ImageThe city of Ariel took part of the Aliyah fair in South Africa during the month of October. This was the second Aliayh fair this year and you could defiantly see the change and the growing interest of the South African community in the absorption options in Ariel. With a good location, reasonable housing prices and a great community the city booth attracted many people.  Some already garneted there arrivals during the month of December to Ariel. The short video recorded during the New Year BBQ gave the visitors at the Aliyah fair a chance to see really what is going on in the English speaking community of Ariel.

Followed by the growing interest in Ariel the new Shaliach to Johannesburg Mr. Shimon Shamila visited Ariel on Thursday the 29th of October. After a meeting with Mayor Ron Nachman, Mr. Shamila was taken around the city by aliyah coordinator Reuven Franks.  Shimon got a chance to see the new sport center, visit the university center meet with Dr Niza Davidovich and learn about the programs offered for over seas students and new olim.
