Elections in the city of Ariel are never a quiet affair, even when the incumbent is as popular as Mayor Ron Nachman. While Israelis typically relate to politics with passion, municipal elections are especially important. Indeed, the results of such an election may have an immediate effect on the quality of life in the city, and even upon the borders of the country.
Ariel municipal elections took place on November 2, 2004 with three candidates for mayor and five separate lists for the city council. Incumbent Mayor Ron Nachman was once again re-elected and his list won 5 of the 11 city council seats. Today, the mayor and new city council members officially take their positions and Nachman has already struck a coalition that gives him a strong majority in the city council.
The leadership of an accomplished mayor with extensive connections in both Israel and abroad remains critical for Ariel. Under Nachman's tenure, the population of Ariel has grown to almost 20,000 mark and the number of services and facilities in the city has steadily increased. Construction of the Sports & Recreation Complex is proceeding according to schedule and work continues on completing the last two miles of the Tel Aviv - Ariel Highway. In addition, after a year of intensive efforts by Mayor Nachman, the Israeli government has decided to include the Ariel bloc of communities within the security fence.
Ron Nachman's experience and accomplishments did not go unnoticed on Election Day. In their show of support for him, the people of Ariel have declared that they are deeply committed to the continued development of Ariel - a strategic asset vital to the security of Israel. |
