With the Prime Minister's opposition, the College of Judea and Samaria is upgraded and will now be called the Ariel University Center of Samaria (AUC).
The news rocked the country and put smiles on the faces of both Ariel residents and the College of Judea & Samaria’s administration. Finally, after a long wait since the 2005 Israeli cabinet decision in favor of the institutions transition to a university, the college was upgraded to the status of a university. At a press conference held in Tel-Aviv in early August the leadership of the newly constituted Ariel University Center of Samaria announced the change in name and status. The institution, formerly known as the College of Judea & Samaria, was authorized to announce this upgrade as part of a five-year timetable established by the Council of Higher Education of Judea & Samaria (CHE-JS) that will lead to its full accreditation as a research university. |

Shortly after Passover 17 teen-aged singers and dancers from Ariel and their chaperones set off on a four-stop tour of the United States. The first stop was South Florida where Ariel's youth entertainers, "For Zion's Sake", were the guests of Calvary Chapel - Ft. Lauderdale. Pastor Kelly and Jan Lyon and Karen Dillon arranged home hospitality for them in the community and prepared a performance schedule within Calvary's churches and schools.
In addition to these special events, "For Zion's Sake" also performed for Temple Bat-Yam in Fort Lauderdale, where they were warmly welcomed by Rabbi Lew Littman, Cantor Wendy Autenreich and American Friends of Ariel Board Member Richard Finkelstein. Richard also arranged for them to perform at the Daniel Cantor Senior Center where their performance met with cheers of appreciation and joy. |
